This lunch discussion will address a number of issues. Is equality a free standing right in the post Lisbon European Union? Or is it simply a means to market integration? Or is it both?
This discussion will center on the evolution of equality rights through the legislative process and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. Where does the Union stand now? The concept of discrimination will be addressed in the light of such cases as Coleman and Feryn. Debate will be invited on the implications of Mangold , Seda Kücükdeveci and Test Achats. Finally we will try and look to the future. What are the implications of the Charter of Fundamental Rights? What legislative proposals are pending? What issues are currently before the Court of Justice of the European Union?
